Importance of Periodic Electrical Installation Inspection:

There is a numerous thing that you will need to do to ensure that things are safe and working fine, it is done by a thorough inspection of your installation.

We all are aware of the dangers associated with electricity. Especially when there is a fault with the electrical installation.

It is a good practice to periodically check and verify that the electric installation in your premises is safe. This is what the Electrical Installation Condition Report is for.

Every electrical installation is subject to deterioration with use and time. Therefore, to avoid health & safety risks of the users, all types of electric installation must be periodically inspected and tested by a competent person.

Electrical equipment testing and tagging are too often taken for granted or forgotten. But its consequences can be devastating and even fatal.

As per WorkSafe-News Zealand, 283 accidents were reported electrical accidents between 1993-2019. Out of these accidents, 48 were fatal accidents.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report – EICR, is periodic inspection & testing on electric installations, which summarizes the findings of the inspection to confirm the safety of the existing electrics in your facility.

The new updated Health and Safety at Work Act – 2016 requires a person conducting the business or undertaking (PCBU) to protect workers and other people by eliminating or minimizing risks at work.

And it is legally required that installations and equipment are electrically safe and maintained in a safe condition.

It is up to them to test and tag their installations. PCBU can either train up a worker or hire a third-party service provider to carry out the testing & inspection.

If the equipment is not safe and causes an accident, the employer/owner may be liable.

It is the task of the PCBU to have all electrical equipment & installation tested by a competent person.

Portable Appliance Test- PAT testing is an easy way to make sure your equipment, devices, and appliances are tested for electrical integrity and are compliant.

Need for EICR:

Electrical installation condition inspection & check alongside your health and safety program can make your company eligible for a significant discount on your Accident Compensation Corporation-ACC levies.
