How Can the Electricity Quality in the UK Be Analyzed?

The energy efficiency of a piece of equipment is its power quality. Power quality issues result in excessive energy consumption and bills, high maintenance expenses, direct repercussions on the economy, productivity loss, unrecoverable downtime, and resources, and unstable or malfunctioning equipment. Any organization must consider energy management, and any energy management program must consider the quality of the electricity. Care Labs provides several services that address a variety of energy issues. We provide services for analysing and studying the quality of electricity, based on our knowledge in the industry.

Problems with the Quality of the Electricity:

The power supply’s quality is a more sophisticated and subtle metric than its dependability. It is irrelevant if there is sufficient supply. Instead, the question is whether the supply can be utilized. Changes in power quality may be divided into two categories:

1. Unrests:

Incorrect voltage or current might lead to disruption. When the peak value of a transient voltage exceeds a certain threshold, it is detectable. When the RMS variation exceeds a particular threshold, voltage variations such as sags, swells, and interruptions are detected.

2. Changes relative to the steady-state:

Changes in the steady-state include variations in the RMS voltage and harmonic wave distortion. Voltage and current must be monitored throughout time in order to keep track of these alterations. This sampling data is most effectively represented as the voltage distortion with time. It may then be analyzed using techniques such as the average distortion level, which has a 95% probability of not being surpassed, etc.

Among the factors that impact supply quality are:

  • Voltage stability
  • How frequently it is available
  • Voltage dips
  • Voltage spikes
  • Transient voltages
  • Alterations in harmony
  • Estimating radio frequency

The majority of these objects are tough to find and observe. To measure them, specialized testing equipment is often necessary, and only qualified technicians or engineers should do the tests.

Voltage Constant:

Because of load and other system events, the steady-state voltage levels of an electrical system are constantly changing. In general, voltage levels decrease as the load increases. Similarly, removing a load raises the voltage level.

Discordant Voltage:

It is a discrepancy in the value or phase angle of the three-phase supply. Unbalanced circuit impedances and unbalanced loads can also cause it. It warms things up, degrades equipment, and reduces their effectiveness.

Variations in Voltage:

Voltage sags are brief decreases in the RMS supply voltage lasting between 0.5 cycles and one minute. Voltage swells are brief increases in the RMS supply voltage that exceed a threshold limit of 0.5 cycles to one minute.

Frequency of Delivery:

The frequency of the supply is the rate at which the waves of the supply voltage variation. NEMMCO (National Electricity Market Management Company), which stands for National Electricity Market Management Company, manages the National Electricity Market. Outside of the National Electricity Market, the frequency norms are determined by the local producing authority.

Modifications to the Harmonics:

It is a repetitive alteration in the pattern of the supplied voltage or current. Extra Harmonics can result in additional losses, flashing lights, malfunctions, radio interference, motor vibrations, and less efficient sensitive equipment.

The procedure at Carelabs for analysing power quality is as follows:

  • Both the power quality survey and the on-site evaluation have specified objectives.
  • As you continue your investigation, create a simple schematic of the entire electrical system.
  • At various distribution endpoints, a power analyzer is connected to collect data from each individual system.
  • Maintaining the distribution system as depicted in the one-line graphic.
  • Examining and analysing the gathered data, as well as doing additional analysis,
  • Submitting reports and proposing remedies.

Our team of highly qualified specialists can assist you in diagnosing and resolving power quality issues. Your power quality will be at its peak if you thoroughly examine and research your system. If you’d like to learn more about our Power Quality Analysis Service, please contact us.
