MOTOR STARTING · SAUDI ARABIA

Motor Start Analysis for Saudi Industrial Plant

A large motor start is a controlled fault. Starting current several times full load drags voltage down across the bus for the duration of the acceleration, and whether that is acceptable depends on what else is connected and on the limits your supply agreement imposes. In Saudi Arabia those limits come from the Saudi Electricity Company, from Aramco SAES-P inside its facilities, or from a giga-project's own grid rules.

What a Motor Start Study Has to Resolve

The question is not whether the motor will start. It is what else stops working while it does.

What We Deliver

Voltage dip at the point of common coupling

Starting a large motor depresses voltage at the supply boundary. SEC-connected plants are held to the dip limits in their connection terms; inside an Aramco asset the SAES-P requirements apply. The study establishes which limit governs before modelling.

WHAT GOES WRONG

Where Motor Start Studies Fall Short

Motor starting problems usually appear at commissioning, when the plant is complete and the cost of changing the starting method is at its highest.

  • Voltage dip assessed at the motor terminals rather than at the supply boundary.
  • Source impedance assumed instead of obtained from SEC or the asset owner.
  • Load torque curve taken as a generic quadratic rather than the driven machine's actual demand.
  • Acceleration time not checked against the motor's locked-rotor thermal limit.
  • Effect on connected drives, contactors and control power not modelled.
  • Study not repeated after the driven load or the starting method changed.

THE OUTCOMES

What the Report Contains

The report gives the dip magnitude and duration at each bus that matters, not just a pass or fail against one number, so the plant team can see which equipment is at risk during the start.

  1. 1Source impedance and its documented origin
  2. 2Voltage profile at each bus through the start
  3. 3Acceleration time against the motor thermal limit
  4. 4Effect on connected drives, contactors and control supplies
  5. 5Starting method comparison with torque margin
  6. 6Assumptions, load torque data and study date

How We Run a Saudi Motor Start Study

01

Establish the governing limits

Confirm whether SEC connection terms, Aramco SAES-P or a project specification set the permissible voltage dip, and identify the supply boundary.

02

Collect source and motor data

Obtain source impedance from the utility or asset owner, motor nameplate and thermal limit curves, and the driven machine's torque demand.

03

Model the bus, not the motor

Build the network including the other connected load, so the study shows what the start does to drives, contactors and control power.

04

Simulate the start

Calculate voltage profile and acceleration time, compare against the thermal withstand, and test alternative starting methods where the margin is thin.

05

Recommend and report

A starting method with its torque margin, the resulting dip at each bus, and the data the conclusion rests on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Starting current is typically six to seven times full load current, and it depresses voltage across the bus for the whole acceleration. That dip can drop out contactors, trip variable speed drives on undervoltage and reset control systems. On a continuous process the cost is the resulting outage, not the motor itself, and none of it is visible without modelling the whole bus.
It depends on the connection. Facilities supplied by the Saudi Electricity Company are held to the dip limits in their connection terms at the point of common coupling. Inside Aramco facilities the SAES-P electrical standards apply instead, and giga-projects operating their own grids set their own. The study confirms which governs before modelling.
It depends on the driven load's torque demand during acceleration, not the motor rating alone. Direct on line gives maximum torque and maximum inrush. Star delta, autotransformer and soft starters reduce inrush but also reduce starting torque, which can extend acceleration past the motor's thermal limit on a high-inertia load. The study compares them with the real torque curve.
Source impedance from the utility or asset owner, the motor nameplate and its thermal limit curve, and the driven machine's torque against speed. Where the load torque curve is unavailable we say so in the report rather than substituting a generic quadratic, because that assumption is what most often makes a marginal start look acceptable on paper.
