Neutral Conductor Overloading Study

Assessment of neutral current on three-phase four-wire systems carrying single-phase electronic load. Third harmonic and its odd multiples are in phase across all three phases and add in the neutral instead of cancelling, so neutral current can exceed phase current on heavily loaded boards.

What the work covers.

Assessment of neutral current on three-phase four-wire systems carrying single-phase electronic load. Third harmonic and its odd multiples are in phase across all three phases and add in the neutral instead of cancelling, so neutral current can exceed phase current on heavily loaded boards.

A reduced neutral was legitimate when load was largely linear and balanced. The same installation carrying modern electronic load can see a neutral current well above the phase current, and because the neutral has no overcurrent protection the overload is invisible until something fails thermally.

Typically in one of these situations: neutral bars, terminations or conductors running hot; boards serving it, led lighting or small power with high electronic content; older installations designed with a reduced neutral being re-loaded. If none of these apply, the study is unlikely to be the right next step and we will say so.

Where any of it is missing we can establish it on site, which changes the scope rather than blocking the work.
