Harmonic Analysis IEEE 519

Harmonic assessment against the IEEE 519-2022 framework, which sets current distortion limits at the point of common coupling scaled by the short-circuit ratio, and voltage distortion limits by system voltage. Compliance is assessed at the PCC, not at individual loads.

What this study establishes.

Measured current and voltage spectra at the PCC across representative operating regimes.

TDD calculation against the IEEE 519 current limit table for the site's Isc/IL ratio.

Voltage THD and individual harmonic assessment against the voltage limit table.

Harmonic source apportionment between site loads and background utility distortion.

System model with resonance scan identifying amplification bands.

Mitigation options compared — line reactors, passive filters, active filters, transformer configuration.

What the work covers.

Harmonic assessment against the IEEE 519-2022 framework, which sets current distortion limits at the point of common coupling scaled by the short-circuit ratio, and voltage distortion limits by system voltage. Compliance is assessed at the PCC, not at individual loads.

IEEE 519 limits apply at the point of common coupling, which is a shared boundary — not at every panel inside the installation. Applying PCC limits internally leads to over-specified filtering and mitigation that was never required.

Methodology

How we run it.

01

Scope & data capture

We confirm the question the study must answer, agree the measurement or modelling points, and collect what the work depends on: utility short-circuit level at the pcc, required for the isc/il ratio; maximum demand load current, averaged per the ieee 519 definition; inventory of non-linear load — vfds, ups, rectifiers, led.

Agreed scope · Named lead engineer
02

Measurement & modelling

Engineers carry out the measurement and modelling on site and in software, under operating conditions representative of the problem rather than a single convenient snapshot.

Calibrated model · Raw records
03

Analysis against standard

Results are assessed against IEEE 519-2022, IEC 61000-4-7, IEC 61000-4-30, with the assessment basis and any measurement uncertainty stated rather than implied.

You receive a signed engineering report with findings ranked by consequence, the reasoning behind each conclusion, and mitigation options costed so they can be acted on or deferred deliberately.

Notes & Queries

Common questions.

01

Typically in one of these situations: utility has issued a distortion notice or made connection conditional on compliance; transformers or neutral conductors running hot without an obvious overload; capacitor banks failing or fuses blowing repeatedly. If none of these apply, the study is unlikely to be the right next step and we will say so.

02

To scope and run the work we need utility short-circuit level at the pcc, required for the isc/il ratio; maximum demand load current, averaged per the ieee 519 definition; inventory of non-linear load — vfds, ups, rectifiers, led lighting, ev chargers. Where any of it is missing we can establish it on site, which changes the scope rather than blocking the work.

03

Primarily IEEE 519-2022, IEC 61000-4-7, IEC 61000-4-30, IEEE 3002.8. The applicable framework depends on your connection agreement and jurisdiction, so we confirm which applies before measurement rather than after.
