Arc Flash Study in the USA

Damages to property and company personnel working in the vicinity of arc flash accident can be staggering.

Safeguard your company personnel and property from arc flash incidents by preforming periodic arc flash study. Care Labs offers a detailed study and analysis report in a very efficient and effective way.

Care Labs provides you services like electrical safety inspections, electrical system design simulations, power systems study & analysis and arc flash study & analysis, in compliance with the OSHA and NFPA 70E/NFPA 70B guidelines.

Care Labs is an authorized ETAP service provider and using it to perform arc flash analysis.

Causes of Arc Flash:

  • Accumulation of dirt
  • Corrosion, contamination, or Dielectric Breakdown
  • Faulty equipment
  • Poor maintenance
  • Careless removal or replacement cover and device
  • Misalignment of moving contacts.

An arc flash incident energy analysis is a critical study to ensure employee safety and it is an engineering investigation intended to provide detailed safety information about an equipment or circuit element to qualified workers servicing that equipment.

How does an Arc Flash hazard happen?

When the insulating medium didn’t offer enough resistance to the flow of electric current, an arc can strike. While a fault or short circuit condition, an arc can occur.

When sufficient energy is present in the line, electric current will ionize the surrounding air and passes through it instead of the intended path. This is known as arc flash, occurs during a fault, or short circuit conditions.

It results in extreme heat, severe burns, and an explosion, that could cause hearing damage or injuries and can be fatal. The temperature of an arc flash can be up to 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit, that’s how much deadly an arc flash can be.

What are the Results of Arc Flash Accidents?

  • Serious or fatal injury to personnel
  • Blinding flash of light
  • Dynamite-level explosion with a sound wave of more than 160 dB
  • Destruction of facilities and damaging the products
  • Operation disruption and downtime
  • Insurance claims, and regulatory fines
  • Trauma and damages the company’s reputation.

Standards/Regulations on Arc Flash Study:

  • Under the OSHA act of 1970, employee’s safe and healthful workplaces should be ensured by their employers.
  • The National Fire Protection Association-NFPA70E standard recommends conducting an arc flash study every 3 years to minimize the risk of electrical hazards and to ensure a safe workplace to perform any electrical analysis.
  • NFPA 70B, recommended practice to perform maintenance and work safely on electrical equipment, maintenance technicians should be trained and have knowledge on this standard.
  • IEEE Standard 1584-2018 provides modeling and an analytical procedure to perform the arc flash calculations of the predicted the arc hazard.

As per the standards of NFPA 70E/70B and OSHA, Carelabs offers an electrical Arc Flash hazard analysis study to find the risk level for all areas in which your employees perform work. Our main objective of the study is to ensure the safety of lives and save your money by safe work practices and minimize the possibility of injuries

Ensure safety and compliance with Carelabs arc flash study:

  • The process of our arc flash risk assessment includes:
    • Data Collection
    • Modeling and analysis performed using ETAP
    • Short Circuit Study
    • Overcurrent Protective Device Coordination Study
    • Arc Flash Study
    • Arc Flash Hazard Calculations
    • Documentation
    • Unsafe Work Locations
    • Arc Flash Hazard Mitigation
    • Produce overall single line diagrams

Arc Flash Study and Analysis Report

Upon completion of the calculations and analysis, we will provide you a draft arc flash report for your review, during which your team can evaluate it and ensure electrical safety of your employees.

On receiving approval, we will provide you a final report, which contains an introduction, executive summary, overall single line diagram, observations, and recommendations. The report will be attested by our registered professional. The drawings and report will also be submitted in a digital format.

Ensure the safe work environment for your employee and facility equipment in compliance with the arc flash study requirements by standard practices.  Contact us to avail of our arc flash study service.
