Performing a power quality study starts with identifying the symptom that triggered it: unexplained motor burnout, nuisance tripping in control systems, memory loss in sensitive equipment, power factor penalties on a utility bill, or a transformer failing before its expected life. Any of these can point to a power quality issue rather than a simple equipment fault.
The next step is data collection and measurement, taken at multiple points across the facility to allow accurate modelling of where a disturbance originates and how far it spreads — voltage RMS, current, power factor, voltage levels, and branch losses are all recorded, using power quality analysers. Some of these instruments are permanently installed in the distribution system for ongoing monitoring; handheld analysers are more commonly used for troubleshooting a specific complaint. Getting the setup right matters: current and voltage probes must be matched correctly, current polarity observed, and the monitoring session run long enough (and on sufficient battery or mains power) to capture the disturbance rather than missing it.
