Importance of Arc Flash Hazard Analysis and Mitigation in Mexico | Carelabs
In recent years, there has seen a great increase in the arc flash hazards and the injuries awareness that result from the lack of adequate personnel protective equipment- PPE kit. However, arc flash faults and hazards have been around since the beginning of electricity usage.
Carelabs provides several services for electrical projects such as electrical safety inspections, electrical system design simulations, power quality analysis study, power systems study, and analysis. We offer professional arc flash analysis services for companies across Mexico in compliance with STPS, NOM-029-STPS-2011, RFSHMAT, and NOM-022-STPS safety standards.
An electrical arcing fault can happen at any time like when no one is around, or somebody is walking so proximity to it, or when somebody is working on the system. The most dangerous situation is whenever someone is near or working on the energized part of the system. Even a minor error could place workers close to dangerous situation.
An electrical arc flash can form when any worker creates a contact between multiple phases or phase to ground with a conductive part while working on the energized electrical system. The temperature released from the arcing fault hazard is intense that can produce radiation burns, which could result in long-term internal bodily damage. The released explosive energy from electrical arc flash creates a pressure wave. When this shock wave comes to contact with any surface or it could be any person, this is known as incident energy.
The objective of the Federal Regulation for Health, Safety, and the Work Environment – RFSHMAT regulation for Health and Safety is the establishing the measures necessary for the prevention of hazardous accidents and illnesses on the work, and this federal regulation’s aim to achieve work being performed under conditions of safety, health, and adequate environment for the workers.
The Regulation defines the responsibilities of employers and employees and serves as the outline for health and safety – each of it detailing with process, programs, trainings, documentation, tests, inspections and required verification in a health and safety program that is compliant.
Electrical standards organizations like STPS, NFPA, ANSI, and IEEE necessitates the employer to protect electrical working personnel from electrical hazard risks through training, proper system maintenance, proper use of equipment, personal protective equipment, and engineering methods for design and assessment of electrical installations.
While NPFA 70E provides various procedure and methods to find the personal protective equipment (PPE) level necessary to keep a worker safe when performing a task, it is based on a specific system configuration. Every electrical distribution network in every facility is different. Each equipment in these paths is a variable that should be taken in to account when assessing potential hazard level of arc flash. An arc flash fault analysis is not just recommended, it is urged requirement due to the likelihood that your electrical system configuration is different from the used configuration to create the table, which must be used as a guideline.
The equations in the recently released IEEE 1584- 2018 standard are focused on determining the incident energy, arc flash labelling, and significant high-current testing. From this arc flash incident energy, we can determine the proper personnel protective equipment accurately for the work to be performed.
